Greek List

If a hurricane season becomes so active to the point where every assigned name on the list has been named, then the season will cycle to the backup list. The backup list contains every letter in the Greek alphabet, from Alpha to Omega. This backup list has only been used one time, which was during the 2005 hurricane season. The names Alpha, Beta, Gamma. Delta, Epsilon, and Zeta were used. This list contains 24 total names for use. This list has only seen a total of 6 tropical storms, 2 hurricanes, and 1 major hurricane since its first use in 2005. Names from this list cannot be retired as they are the official letters of the Greek alphabet. The WMO said that if a name is ever to be so devastating that it would be in line for retirement, that the name would still be used for future seasons due to the rarity of such an active season.
